Design frozen-ish

Okay, I haven’t checked it in anything but Firefox, though the CSS should be simple enough not to screw up in any major browsers. What you’re seeing (assuming you’re not reading this from the year 2045 or whatever) is the base design from which I’d like to do some innovative crap. Like a floating livesearch menu that expands from an unobtrusive (yet omnipresent) design element and sits translucent on the side of the screen. Amongst other things. It’s not amazingly groundbreaking, I guess, but I’d like to do it nicely/well.

Maybe the breaking down of chronology could happen at some point, but I don’t really have any great ideas as to how to do that effectively. I also haven’t bothered to validate this thing yet. Should do that at some point. It’s semantically fine, though.

errr, it might just be me but is the “leave a comment” bit really supposed to be floating in the text looking like it doesnt belong or that it is a broken link?

and its… big, nice readable font size, big is beautiful, or so they say, im sure its just because it is new but the colours are going to take some growing on me before ill admit i like them :P

good work, it will take time to get used to im sure, and these new features sound promising, so im looking forward to this new future you have instore for us…

AND i just noticed someone hasnt clicked their wp clock over for daylight savings… well either its you or dale :P

  3. Matthom says:

What? No navigation links??? I RELY on navigation links, SO MUCH — I need them!!!! I especially like the never-changing, static sections — like ABOUT, and CONTACT. Those sections rULE. I visit them at every site I go to. What is that strange Search box you have at the top? Are we supposed to use that??

OK — enough sarcasm. ;) I’m looking forward to see where your design goes…

  4. Josh says:

Ben: Yeah WP didn’t change :( I’ve just fixed it though. The server, for the record, was fine. Oh and I like the big font, too. As for the green/brown, I seriously think it’s underrated. And this being my own corner of the web, I’ll do whatever the heck I want :P

Matthom: Heh, yeah. I will actually bring nav links back, for static sections, but I’m still working out the best way to display them. As for “seeing where the design goes”… it’s finished! Don’t you like it?! *cries* ;-) Yeah, okay, so it’s a perpetual work in progress :P

  5. Matthom says:

Oh, of course no — I wasn’t thinking this was “incomplete,” nor was I thinking I didn’t like it. In fact, it’s partially the same look that some of my own sites are taking on — such as matthoMovies.

This statement is what made me think you were “setting” the base, and then “working up” from here. Either way, it’s good.

  6. Josh says:

Lol… sorry… I was kidding, that didn’t quite come across clearly enough :P Yeah it’s not finished, I was pretending to be upset ;-)

Btw, do you have a “Planet Matthom” feed that aggregates all the stuff you write on your various blogs into one thing?

  7. dale says:

Well I think it looks better than your last design, I didn’t like that, far too much stuff to distract you.

I also like how you have removed the goooooogle ads from the front page.

    Some small issues:
    1) The colour change when you hover over “StreetComputing” is annoying
    2) The “days until the HSC ends” float hovers over the text in 1024x768

I also reckon you should dump the “StreetComputing” name and call it joahua or something.

Your search submit button would look better if you stylised it a bit too.

Other than that it is good, easier to read.

P.S looks good in Safari too.

  8. dale says:

Oh and whats with your copyright junk? Just feels a bit over the top. Ok, fine for your posts, but the comments?

Not that I have an issue with you “owning” them, it is just well, meh.

  9. Josh says:

Yeah I hadn’t had Google ads on the front page for some time. They’d been in the side bar, but not in the main content.

Haven’t thought about 1024 yet. The HSC thing will go soon, too. Search will change the layout a bit so I’ll address it then.

RE: comment copyright, I think there’s valuable content in some of those that shouldn’t be locked down. I made a lengthy comment on Matthom’s blog that is very post-like in nature. This is just a way of opening that content up. Plus it keeps policy across the site uniform.

Will post more later, got to run. like the name change idea, will do.

  10. Dale says:

Doesn’t the search text box look nice in safari?

    :)

  11. Josh says:

Oooh pretty. Might have to rip graphics from that screenshot and make all browsers look like that :P Another design, soon to come, is currently taking up most of my time though, so it mightn’t happen for a while. And “a while” might soon become “in a month, after I get back from NZ”, because that’s damn close :S

  12. kitten says:

im SOOOO thinking i should change to mac’s right about… NOW! but yeah, cash is one problem, leaving the country for a year soon is another, so yeah… ahhh mac’s *ben’s heart beats just a little faster*
