Yeah I briefly looked at some of the Amazon stuff but it just didn't really interest me that much, mainly because I like the flexibility of hosting my own stuff :) And the random pricing structure (which I suppose does make sense)! If I wanted something easy to look after then I would probably go that route (although Australian hosted).

I've got a co-located server and firewall in some data centre in Sydney that seems to work nicely. I've been trying out some terminal services stuff so I couldn't do that if it was hosted in the US.

I believe Internode have a CDN of some description and they have heaps of awesome connectivity, but I don't know if you can actually host with them....

I had a look at Anchor and do remember them being pretty expensive (??), although I have heard good things about them.

Hey!

Good observation, though it depends on the audience methinks - for this site it's not really an issue, because regulars use RSS (so latency is no big deal/big tools like Google Reader function as pseudo-CDNs) and most referred visitors are coming from the US.

Interestingly, I'm on an even-crappier TPG connection at home (iiNet business at the office) and am averaging 220ms. Go figure!

In Australia, I recently (as in earlier this year) started using Anchor - they've been pretty painless, averages 18ms, and super reliable, great support.

Do you have any thoughts on latency for cloud applications? Lately I've been considering Rackspace Cloud (used to be called Mosso) for some media serving stuff as it's hooked up to Limelight CDN... but haven't really encountered any prominent examples of Australian usage. They're running an office out of Hong Kong to look after APAC region more generally, but info on Australia is kind of light on.

Hi Josh,

I've always been interested in the cheap US hosting but it really does just feel much slower.

Check out this link which I think it pretty relevant http://mike.bailey.net.au/blog/?p=38

Obviously this is only an issue for websites that have mostly Australia visitors.

For example this site loads very slowly on my crappy iinet connection :) I'm getting an average of 370ms to the server.

Also from me a big THX!
Tried for one day to get subclipse running...
Your tip works fine with both versions (1.4.x and 1.6.x).

For the 3008wfp, the monitor will come on. Then hit the "-" and look on the upper left.

Look under "Hour" to find the hour usage of the monitor. Mine got 121 h as I got a great deal on a almost new monitor for $790 after bing and ebay bucks.
