Crazy switch

My switch has been playing up the past few days… eugh. It’ll work perfectly for two minutes, then cut out for thirty seconds to two minutes, and repeat. This basically means I can’t download anything in Firefox (wget handles a little better… not much, but a little), and Ximian Evolution keeps crashing as it loses the IMAP (or Exchange) link and wonders what the hell happened. Oh, yeah, and the fact that Ubuntu’s clock/calendar is intrinsically linked with the mail client means I’ve been using date and cal -m… far out, I may as well just start using mutt or something!

More seriously, I’m thinking I might actually have to plug stuff directly into the router here (shock), or start using the ancient Baystack thing… but I can’t use that til after Sunday (Christmas Carols service alluded to previously… can’t be bothered finding a link) seeing as I’m going to use it as my ‘portable’ hub just in case I need to transfer stuff between computers and… run out of blank discs or both my SD cards and readers die or something. More probably, that a file is too enormous for a CD (only one machine has a DVD burner, and I’m not editing on it). Whatever. Dying switches suck.

A reminder of why semantic HTML and CSS rock, from an unlikely source

Photoshop, graphics heavy-weight app that it is, does not feel like it should ever be used for web design prototyping. I’m new to this whole gig, having used the GIMP for several years now (on and off since 2001) but even that is still a graphics application and not… a web one.

On a small-ish site, even a minor change becomes hellish — someone asked me to change the font size down a bit, which of course involved going to TOO MANY BLOODY LAYERS and manually adjusting the font size. And don’t even ask about form controls… Mocking that up involves layers, placement… but none of it synced to the font size. So when I change the font size, the forms of course are all out of position.

CSS… I change two digits and the entire site changes along with them. Magic.

p.s. Oh, yeah, and how the hell do you markup a TABLE in Photoshop? Dumb dumb dumb!

TNT2 TV-out as a secondary display

I thought I’d seen it done in the past, but I was playing around with it today and couldn’t get it to work. So maybe it’s not.

Basically the only way I could get PAL Composite or S-Video output to work was if I set it up as the primary (sole) display. Which really sucks. I mean, it’s not a terribly major thing, but it’s also very irritating. Bleeeeehhh.

Anyone had any luck in the past with that on a TNT2?
