Moving

At some time around 11 last night, the enormity of this horrific thing hit me. Not so much the packing side — that’s okay, I can deal with that; enough of my life is already existing in boxes for it to be no huge difference (that said, I think I have an assessment or two the week we’re moving, so that will be fun…). I’m more worried about continuity of life in general.

Despite what too many geeks would tell you, there is life beyond the Internet. My physical address is just as important to me as other addresses, although certainly less often visited. Having said that, the circumstances which brought me to worry about such things can be attributed to geek effects, specifically, my ownership of domain names. Bugger.

Does that make me as sad as I thought it did but moments after? Screw the bank, my school, friends and whoever else has my address! What about my Whois records!?

This’d be easier to resolve if I knew where I’m moving to in however many weeks time it is now — my present nightmare isn’t living in a Self-Storage facility (heh, taking the “Self” part of “Self-Storage” a little too literally, perhaps), but rather having to temporarily receive mail at such a location! What do I do? Is it easier just to hope that I don’t get any correspondence of substance for a few weeks in limbo, and leave a forwarding address, hoping nothing too urgent arrives? Or should I send people “DON’T SEND ME MAIL!!!” messages for the week preceding the great traversal to the as-yet-undefined new place of residence?

Perhaps I should leave a scanner behind, and request the new owners email letters to me. Hmm. The geek options are always the most appealing…

Web Standards Smackdown

Web Essentials 04 – WWWWF (Transcript of event) has to be one of the funnier things I’ve read for a while. I’m so there next year, study for HSC be damned!

Essential services

My start bar is vertical!!! I don’t know how to get it back and I need geek advice NOW!!

New Section: Photography

The more attentive amongst my regular readers (who aren’t using this website solely by means of RSS) will probably have noticed a new link in my primary navigation list, at the top right of your screen.

If you’re not a regular reader, the title of this post should have given away just which link it is. If you’re still lost, just click “Photography“.

The only album in there at present contains some of the photos which I’d promised to release a few weeks back, but hadn’t due to a variety of reasons. Some of the scans aren’t great, but that’s more because the scanner/photos were dirty, and I couldn’t be bothered using negs. If you wish to purchase higher resolution versions, then get in touch, and we’ll work something out.

As for the technical side of things, the gallery is powered by a PHP application known as PhotoStack, which I’ve found to be most excellent, aside from a few irritating form elements in the admin control. That said, I bothered to spend ten-twenty minutes looking over the code and adding <label> tags to every checkbox control, and many other things as well.

The system itself is excellent, using flat files for everything, and generating static pages all over the place. I haven’t checked out page gen times yet, but I think Michael would be proud — that said, I’m still using his bandwidth like there’s no tomorrow… sorry about that.

I’ve emailed Noel, who is the lead (and currently only?) developer behind the project about it, about the patches, and he’s advised that there is an SVN system in place, but it’s yet to be setup. I didn’t do anything major, but it’d be nice for others to be able to enjoy good form controls… so we’ll see.

In the meantime, anyone who wants my label-ised version of the code is most welcome to it.

To use, simply replace your photostack.php file inside the photostack root directory with one of the above versions. Note that if you’re viewing the syntax highlighted version, you MUST copy and paste content, instead of saving the document, as there are HTML formatting tags throughout it. The best solution is to download the plain text version, and save it as photostack.php.

In accordance with the license of PhotoStack itself, these changes are released under the terms of the GPL. To find out more, visit GNU’s GPL page.

Enjoy!

Sold: House. Sydney, Australia

On the 9th of September, I announced that my current place of residence was for sale. Slightly more than one month later, it has been sold for $AU1,000,000.

It appears that offer was more palatable than Planet Banana to the owners, something which causes me infinite displeasure. I would have rather liked Planet Banana.

And yes, that is a full $AU150,000 shy of the initial listing price, but that’s what happens when people place unrealistic expectations, and attempt to assume their own expertise in such matters. If I recall correctly, the agency recommended we list at $1,100,000, but the male parental unit decided that $1,150,000 was a better idea. That worked well…

Anyway. It’s sold. I’ll probably get all nostalgic and wind up taking lots of photos. Maybe.
